I Dream of Films That Haven’t Been Made Yet

An inspired film often grows out of a chance, indelible image that insists on being seen. In collaboration with Gallery x-ist, !f istanbul has asked artists and graphic designers to put those images to paper and create posters for imaginary films. The exhibition will run for 10 days at the Festival Center.

!f Istanbul sets the city in motion. In keeping with our collective spirit, we invite anyone with a camera to take part in the !f Istanbul documentary, which will be compiled from footage shot by festival-goers throughout the festival. Feel free to stop by the Macport station each day between 3 PM – 9 PM at the Festival Center in The Hall, and upload your footage. The resulting documentary will be screened during !f’09.

L’annee derniere a Marienbad (Last year at Marienbad), is a French film written by Alain Robbe Grillet and directed by Alain Resnais. Produced in 1961, Delphine Seyrig, Giorgio Albertazzi, Sacha Pitoeff share the leading roles. The most important characteristic of the film is “the narrator”. The performance is a project of “the story teller” as in the drama and inspired by the film itself. Approximately 30 minutes long.

The Global Peace and Justice Coalition (BAK) in 2003 was founded in Turkey, with the signing of a text signed all over the world by intellectuals like Tarık Ali and Howard Zinn. It’s the first and only special effects studio that specializes in prosthetic make-up, animatronics and character design in Turkey. When Superman flew, they were amazed; they fell in love with the Lord of Darkness, were awed by Salieri’s rapid aging; laughed hard at Evil Dead, and Videodrome and Jacob’s Ladder blew their minds. And on top of that here come Hellboy, Black Sheep and Planet Terror... Are you ready to be surprised?

This week’s guests are Sergei Paradjanov, a cinematic magician, and Artavazd Peleshian, who blurs the boundary between fiction and documentary. The group will show Paradjanov’s masterpiece Sayat Nova/Color of the Pomegranate. Alternative cinema fans will enjoy!

Re_Potemkin: A Copyleft Crowdsourcing Free/Open Source Cinema Project

Re-Potemkin is one of the very first examples of using crowdsourcing, copyleft and free/open source methods for film production. For the project Re_Potemkin, 105 Basic Design course students at Yıldız Technical University’s Art & Design department "re-produced" Sergei Eistenstein's classic Battleship Potemkin in 23 groups. Habib Bolat and .-_-. prepared Potemkin Divided and Re_Potemkin vs Potemkin by re-editing the open sources of the project.
