Mexico is currently home to an exciting new wave of filmmaking. Kyzza Terrazas, along with actors Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal, is part of the highly successful Canana film production company. He will lead a workshop on Canana’s approach to filmmaking, and what the Turkish film industry might be able to learn from the Mexican experience Canana represents. Canana is responsible for many of last year’s biggest festival Mexican hits, including Cococchi, Deficit, Drama/Mex and Chavez. Among the company’s accomplishments are a first-look deal with top US studio Focus Features- a landmark arrangement between a US studio and Mexican company. Canana’s goal is to produce films that show Mexico as it really is, and which resonate worldwide.

Altyazı Trashes Your Films!

Do your friends have nothing but praise for your shorts? Does everybody say “cool”, but you feel something is missing? Motivated by the lack of film criticism in the short film arena, the film magazine Altyazı has set up this workshop to encourage debate with short filmmakers. Bring in your film and let’s watch, discuss and criticize it… Allow us to trash your film! Films will be viewed by the director, crew and any participants, and followed by a discussion.
Notes:
- The director must apply in person with a DVD copy of his/her film to the !f Information desk at AFM Fitaş cinema. The quota is limited to 10 people and early applications will have priority.
- Participating films can be maximum 10 minutes in length.
- Discussions will be open to the public.
- Discussion sessions will be limited to 30 minutes per film (screening included).

DocIstanbul is a group of filmmakers and scholars who aim to increase public awareness of the documentary and to broaden its audience in Turkey. They bring us a 2-day video activism/citizen journalism event with the participation of two influential groups from Israel and the USA which use audio-video technologies to record, report and advocate issues related to human rights violations.
New York-based I-Witness uses video to protect civil liberties and probe police actions. B'Tselem, the Israeli Information Center for Human Rights in the Occupied Territories, was established in 1989. Turkey’s FotoRoportaj.org, has thus far recorded the stories of gypsies, women strikers at Novamed, child workers, handicapped people and garbage collectors. The program will combine presentations of their ongoing projects as well as a hands-on training session with Turkish filmmakers.
