about the film
Director Mania Akbari's second work to be screened at !f (after 20 Fingers in 2004) once again blurs the boundaries between film, art and life. A sequel (of sorts) to Abbas Kiarostami's Ten, in 10 +4 Mania courageously lets her cancer dictate her film, as she flows with it through her own life. Male and female relationships were under scrutiny in 20 Fingers. This time, with her camera following her everywhere, this formidable woman spares no one, first and foremost not herself. Conversations with her friends and family are recorded within the intimate spaces of a car, a gondola, and a hospital bed. The camera is always there, always on. It records the community police who stops Mania’s car to chastise her for her bald head, it records her sons as they go for drives in Mania’s car, it records her daily conversations with friends. 10+4 feels like we’re lightly spying on Mania’s hardest time. And what a privilege that is- along with her, we are allowed to experience the joys of life, fear of death, and just being.
