about the film
Described by producer Susan Lacy as “an artist as famous as her subjects”, American photographer Annie Leibovitz has been documenting contemporary cultural icons since 1972, for magazines such as Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair and Vogue. She is the photographer behind iconic images like John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s 1981 shoot, which was made into an award-winning Rolling Stone cover and which was shot hours before Lennon’s assassination, or pregnant Demi Moore’s Vanity Fair cover. Leibovitz has redefined the celebrity portrait by infusing her images with rich colour and astonishing presentation. She doesn’t shy from the serious either, covering the war in the Balkans or bearing witness to the scandalous trial of O. J. Simpson. Granted unrestricted access, her sister Barbara began shooting this documentary in 2006. The result is an intimate look at the life of an artist, on the job and on numerous shoots, but it is also a revealing portrait of Leibovitz the person as she discusses issues like her very private 15-year relationship with Susan Sontag, or her decision to have children late. Leibovitz, you notice, walks through life lightly. Open and down-to-earth, you sense that she is gifted by her ability to be entirely herself, whether shooting the milkman, or the Queen.
