about the film
Eva and Bernhard’s is a friendship which unfolds as Eva loses her social standing among her circle of rich friends after she is dumped by her boyfriend. A chance encounter leads to the start of an unlikely relationship between the arrogant, self-absorbed, upper class Eva and 61-year-old Bernhard, who is newly divorced, good-hearted and unemployed. First-time director Johan Kling paints a stark and clear-sighted film out of these two characters and their awfully different worlds. When in Eva’s world, you’re in a world of icy colours and cold aesthetics, whereas in Bernhard’s world, the relentless pace gives way, everything is warmer yet much more dominated by shades of brown. In addition to its uncompromising direction and genuine acting, the film is also a perceptive diagnosis of Sweden in the new millennium. The cold, narcissistic lives of upper class youths and the loneliness of the aging are both deftly portrayed in Darling, a darkly humorous, tender yet painful portrayal of souls lost on the way here somewhere.
about the director
Johan Kling was born in Stockholm in1962. He decided to create his own education after getting rejected by film schools. On minimal budgets and lots of energy, he and his team created several Swedish TV shows and series that garnered a cult following and won awards. Darling, his first feature, was acclaimed by the press as the Nordic film of the year, and Kling got ranked as one of the 60 faces for the festival future by Variety. He is currently working on a new project that he hopes to shoot in the summer of 2008.
