about the film
Actor Gael García Bernal makes his directorial debut with Deficit, a free-wheeling tale of a weekend house party gone wrong that perceptively addresses class issues in contemporary Mexico. Cristobal (played by Bernal), a rich, bourgeois, hip-hop fan whose father is a corrupt businessman in exile, invites his friends over for a barbecue at his parents’ plush weekend home in the country. His younger sister and her hippie, pill-popping friends are also there, enjoying the pool and anticipating a wild party. When Cristobal’s friends arrive with Dolores, an Argentinian beauty, he gives his girlfriend wrong directions to the house in order to buy some time with her. Inevitably a comic yet poignant clash between the vastly different groups of friends occurs. Even worse, as the sun sets and the party gets underway, a class struggle of a different kind begins to build up when Adan, the gardener who has known Cristobal since childhood, shows some interest in Dolores. Brimming with the exuberant energy of its youthful cast, Déficit is an honest take on the dynamics of class in contemporary Mexico that will seem eerily familiar to Turkish audiences.
