about the film

Filmmaker and much-loved agitator Michael Moore follows the massive success of Farenheit 9/11 with his funniest and most moving film to date, although the fact that the USA is the only developed nation which lacks a universal health care system hardly seems like a laughing matter. 50 million Americans have no health care insurance and no way to get it; many more who think they are covered are liable to find themselves falling foul of absurd loopholes denying them their benefits. Beginning with the heart-rending testimonies of several ordinary Americans whose lives have been shattered by the discovery that their insurance was worthless when they or their families got ill, Moore shows how the Nixon regime ushered in a system whereby healthcare is exploited for profit in the private sector, rather than being seen as an essential public service like education or law enforcement. Journeys abroad provide some of the wittiest scenes, as he makes comparisons with the health services in England, France, Canada and Cuba, pointing out the irony that Guantanamo Bay detainees enjoy better medical care than 9/11 volunteers.
