about the film
Year of the Nail is the strikingly original tale of almost-love between Molly, a 21 year-old New Yorker, and Diego, a Mexican in the throes of puberty. In the year of Diego’s ingrown toenail, Molly travels to Mexico, to spend some time learning Spanish, and rents a room in Diego’s house. A close relationship soon develops between the two. Diego, who was previously consumed by desire for his cousin Emilia, redirects his obsession after Molly arrives. She enjoys the attention and sense of respect missing from her relationships with previous boyfriends. The relationship grows, until Molly returns to New York. Diego decides to follow her and win Molly’s heart. For his imaginative debut feature, youthful director Jonas Cuarón spent a year photographing his surroundings, everything from everyday activities to hospital visits and stray cats. He then collected all the images together to create a photo-album-film whose technique is pure poetry. The characters depicted in this film are real, although the story is fictional. The result is a moving tribute to life’s sweet fleeting moments, sweeter because they are inevitably fleeting.
